It is not the Olympics, it is not a life or death situation, and it is training and not much more. It is during training that you should allow yourself to get into bad situations and to not be upset when you are tapped out/beaten by your training partners. It is necessary to see the weaknesses in your skills, strategy, and abilities in order to discover what needs improvement. Training partners are the best tools for helping to discover such things.

Leave your ego at the door and off the mat. Your ego is what will get you or your partners injured because someone refused to tap out. Injuries prevent progression in everybody and if you are injured, you cannot train. Your training partners then also lose out because they now have one less training partner to learn from and practice with. Ideally there will be a feeling of comradeship amongst fellow students of the martial arts as everyone makes a similar personal journey towards being a formidable fighter/competitor.

This also applies to people who have little to no interest in being a fighter or entering any sort of competition. Even those who are not motivated to be a competitor are very valuable to those who do compete. During training injuries are possible. I believe that training with someone who is not having an ego issue lessens the chances of getting injured. The lack of injuries prevents players from having to take time off and slow their advancement and skill improvement. There are many ways to stay in shape and some involve home workouts that are still great for BJJ and MMA. However there is nothing quite like rolling and sparring.

You see, this works because most attackers - most fighters - are used to seeing people freeze up in panic, or try to move fast enough to cover up against their flurry of attacks. But, the secret that I'm sharing with you takes a different path to self defense success.

This secret is the skill of effective evasion. Instead of blocking, or covering and hoping to minimize the damage until he goes away, we're going to use proper timing to...

We can do that by:

1. It is common courtesy to address instructors as sir, ma'am, or sensei. By doing this you show that you have respect for the instructor and you understand the discipline side of the martial arts. Karate lessons will help you learn discipline and respect as you gain experience as a martial artist.

2. A karate school is often referred to as a Dojo, Dojang, school, or training hall. Dojo is short for dojang and it simply means a place where people gather to train in the martial arts.

3. Bowing is a sign of mutual respect towards another person. Many Americans relate "bowing" to bowing down to authority or that someone is better than they are. This is not at all the case in the martial arts, it's a mutual sign of respect. Depending on how traditional the school is, you should bow when you enter and leave the training hall, when you start and finish class, and when speaking with your instructor. This will vary by school so don't be afraid to ask.

4. Always be polite and respectful to others. This should be a mantra you live by anyway; however, in a martial arts training hall its a rule! Lose your ego, treat others as you wish to be treated, you know, the basics. Once you walk through the door and enter the dojo, you are no longer a doctor, mom, dad, lawyer, cashier, etc., you are a student.

5. Watch a class before signing up so you see what is taught at the school. This is a common mistake by beginners, they sign up for the first place they visit only to realize this was not the type of training they were looking for. If the instructor is extremely pushy and won't let you watch a class or try one for free, this should be a sign. I realize schools have to make money, every business does! If your program is great you won't have to pressure people into signing up!

6. Have the right attitude- martial arts is not about "kicking someones butt"! Karate lessons will build confidence and help to build self-esteem. It's a great workout and it will help you lose weight and get in shape, all of this is true! The goal is to learn how to be a strong martial artist and if you have to defend yourself you need to be good at it. Protecting yourself and your family, absolutely! Training to start fights and kick butt, not at all! Now, don't get me wrong, fighting in the ring is not only great experience, it allows you to put your skills to the test in the right forum, not on the street for fun.

7. You must be open to learning- if you already know everything why are you there? Many younger students come in with the attitude that they already know a lot based on practicing what they see on TV. You may know a few things based on research and that is great; however, to improve you must be open to learning. The day will soon come where you test for your next rank and have plenty of time to show your skills.

8. Work hard and always do your best! Martial arts will help you to push your boundaries and do things you never thought were possible. By working hard and safely pushing yourself you will expand your mind and body and grow as a martial artist. The more you give, the more you will get in return!

9. Help others as you grow and develop as a martial artist. Part of learning and improving your life is also giving back to others. I don't mean you should walk around and correct everyone and be a know it all, that is not the point. But I do mean helping others achieve their goals, improve techniques, and become better martial artists.

After the war Israel would become the new home of millions of refugees, but once again it would only be their home if they could keep it, and after the horrors in Europe no one questioned the need to fight. Before even becoming a nation the new settlers would have to fight, and they're still fighting today.

If you don't fight you leave yourself at the mercy of others, and you'd better hope and pray that they value life as you do, but what do you do when they see you as nothing more than a problem to be dealt with? In its simplest form, the take down defence keys are these:

We were told to use our ki in our techniques but were never taught how to tap into that source of energy. In 1985 I took a massage class as part of my jujitsu training. I learned the Okazaki Long Life Massage and elements that went with it included ki flow, meridians, and specific points. We were taught that we could use the same points for hurting or healing and it depended upon our intent as to what the effect was: hurt or heal.

After a fairly good basic understanding of the "boards" I returned to the practice of karate but with a better understanding of what the techniques were about. The more I learned about jujitsu, the more I learned about karate. In 1994 I began training with an Hwa Rang Do master that happened to be blind. I learned many interesting concepts on ki, ki flow and healing techniques known as Kiatsu. I also learned that if I combined the jujitsu and the karate it looked a lot like Hwa Rang Do.

In the years that followed I made an extensive search for more information regarding the use of pressure points. I also made a study of the use of pressure points as relating to the use of joint locks and constrictions. I studied every good text I could find on pressure point fighting. Trust me, there are not that many good martial arts books available. Either they are really good or they are marginal in either the concepts they present or the application of the techniques.

From some of the material (marginal in my opinion) I learned that the use of pressure points and ki flow was irrelevant and probably did not exist because it could not be measured. The knowledge of the pressure points and meridians was good however, because they followed nerves, blood vessels and other sensitive and vital parts of the human anatomy. If ki flow and meridians was not relevant or did not work, then why has it remained viable in acupuncture, acupressure, shiatsu, Kiatsu and other oriental healing arts and techniques for over 5000 years? If there were not something there that was working then it would have gone away just like many "styles" of martial arts that did not work.

At this juncture my martial art training consists of the three arts mentioned above: Jujitsu (Dan Zan Ryu), Karate (Shotokan), Hwa Rang Do plus Haganah (Israeli). Every hard technique (karate and Hwa Rang Do) is done to support and set up the soft techniques (Jujitsu). The Haganah (like Krav Maga on steroids!) adds a unique mindset to the mix. That mindset is one of survival and winning.

How is this concept employed? With every entrance into a jujitsu technique there are 1- 5 strikes that include punches, elbows, knee strikes and kicks. It also includes head butts, body slams, and eye gouges. Every strike is aimed at a vital part of the anatomy i.e. pressure points. Included in the training is an elemental knowledge of cross body meridian strikes, element theory, yin/ yang, and to a lesser extent the diurnal cycle. If I am attacked at 10:00 p.m. I am not going to wait around to 1:00 a.m. to cold cock my attacker!

With every joint lock there is a preceding strike to set up the joint lock so it may be employed with little or no resistance. Catching a fist flying at my nose and doing a joint lock is possible but not very probable. If I first evade the attack and blast my attacker at Triple Warmer 17 for example I can then do the joint lock without resistance. For every joint lock there is a throw or two. Then after the throw there is a constriction: say arm bar or choke/strangulation. [Note: I did not blast Adam when he tried to punch me in the nose. I did a light slap on the tip of his nose and got excellent results.]

Another relevant topic: the traditional kata teach you where these points are and the angle from which they should be delivered. Is that really a block you are doing or is it a map showing where to strike? Or is it both?

4. Maintain your figure four hold as you place your toes under the attacker's head and shoulder. The left knee is placed on the attacker's jaw line. The right knee goes into the ribs. Place the attacker's elbow directly into your stomach and pull straight back. If the attacker's wrist is not bent, use both hands to bend it. If this does not work back fist him in the face then bend his wrist. You may use both hands to pull the wrist toward your stomach.

5. Upon submission roll your opponent onto his face and move to a defensive position.

PRINCIPLES OF TECHNIQUE APPLICATION

1. Generate momentum with movement of the hips.

2. Use distractions to cover your intent and to short-circuit your opponent.

3. Put joints into opposition. [This creates complex torque.]

4. Immobilized joints create pain by elongating and tightening the ligaments and tendons.

5. Control your opponent.

6. Use pressure point strikes as part of your distractions.

7. Always create a base.

These points will weaken the wrist and act as an energy drain that will allow you to fold the wrist, which in turn, will encourage your partner to vigorously lie down. Self Defense Techniques - Learn the Power of the Staff

Self-defense, involves defending oneself, one's property or the well-being of another from physical harm.

Everyday objects, such as baseball bats or aerosol spray cans, almost anything can also be used as improvised weapons for self-defense, but these weapons are not as likely to be as effective as weapons made for this purpose.

Some non-lethal weapons as the Kubotan have also been built to resemble everyday objects, such as keychains so they can be carried on you at all time. Let's face it, it is a little hard to walk around with a sword or a pair of nunchakus and not draw attention from the law.

This article is about the grandfather of all long weapons, the staff. A staff is a large, long, thick stick or stick-shaped object that can be used as a weapon. Learn this weapon and you can improve your martial arts empty hand techniques and when uses for defense can increase your odds of surviving an attack on the street. So grab a pole, broom handle or any type of long object, it does not need to be round, and improve your odds when it comes to defending yourself.

The Chinese martial artists of old had a saying "When fighting with only the fists, be concerned about running into someone young and strong. When fighting staff against staff, worry about an opponent who is old and wise." When it comes to strength against strength, the younger and stronger of the two will often defeat an older, less powerful adversary.

A staff changes everything. The older, more experienced staff fighter has the upper hand and he wins not because of his physical condition, but by his knowledge of staff techniques.

In the old days, in northern China, empty hand training was the most important form of training, followed by staff training. The Chinese in the southern part of the country placed more emphasis upon staff expertise.

Kung Fu schools were run by martial art instructors, in the old days, who were hired by the village by judging both the martial art instructors empty hand fighting abilities and his staff fighting knowledge. The basic fighting knowledge of a possible instructor for the school was apparent by his empty hand fighting techniques. If he was an expert with a staff, that showed the the people of the village that the instructor has overall experience and proficiency at focusing power through a weapon that lacked a cutting edge and this was much desired.

The staff requires powerful swings and jabs to be effective as a weapon. To use a staff for self defense effectively, a martial artist must know how to use his body to produce sufficient power and be able to transfer that power through the staff. Mastering the staff makes the learning of all other long handled weapons easier to manage

Training with the staff build's forearms muscles and teach full energy extension. Being good at staff fighting means you should be able to knock any weapon out of an opponents hand. The staff is an extension of the martial artist's hands. So staff training will benefit your empty hand techniques.

True staff power is expressed in whip-like strikes, with the tip of the staff vibrating as the power travels through it's length. When staff techniques are performed correctly the staff will make a humming sound. When using the staff to jab at your opponent the power should travel through the staff like a solid straight punch.

Training with a staff isn't limited to only forms. After learning a form, using a staff, you can use a partner to practice full power contact training. The two person form method demonstrates the application of techniques using one technique at a time. This practice involving striking the staff against another staff to train both martial artist, to both give and take the force generated by a properly wielded weapon.

Staff contact training, which is different than two person form training, is the actual practice of using the staff at full power using 3 or more techniques at a time. The martial artists practices until they can use the staff techniques at full strength against each others staff and be able to perform the combination. One person attacks, the other defends and returns an attack, going back and forth through the techniques.

Another staff training method is called internal staff training and involves two person contact training. With this type of training the staff is used using smaller circular striking patterns and striking to the body with more of a push than a strike. This type of practice is designed to make the martial artist more sensitive to the weapon and give him a higher level of expetise at using it.

No matter what martial art you study a background in staff techniques will improve your empty hand techniques. From your fist training you learn to use your hands, from the staff you learn to use your body and natural power.

Chokes from the rear can leave one defenseless or unconscious in a very short amount of time. A rear choke hold is more dangerous on the street due to the fact you cannot see the attacker. Are they large and powerful or smaller in stature. You cannot see their eyes or demeanor. Are they just after your wallet or purse and then they will release you. Are they some sociopath or drug addict out of their mind that is looking to truly kill you. Or a gang member looking for their initiation kill. The only option you have is to escape the choke as quickly as possible.

Rear Choke Self Defense Technique 1

If the choke is more with the assailants hands on your shoulders or on your neck it is easier to defend than with their arm around your neck. In this situation take a step forward raise the opposite arm and turn into the attacker. This self-defense move will break their grip and move you closer and to their side.

Typically you would want to turn with the less dominant arm. This frees the dominant arm to strike. Use a palm strike to their chin or nose. Gouge their eyes with your fingers or thumbs. Attack their throat with a chop, hammerfist or spearing punch. If they are too close to strike with a hand shorten up and strike with an elbow or knee. Escape the scene as soon as possible. You do not know if they may attack you again.

Rear Choke Self Defense Technique 2

A rear choke with an arm bar is quite possibly the most frightening way of being attacked. We all are aware that without blood and oxygen flowing to the brain we can lose consciousness quickly. Time is of the essence in this self-defense situation. There are mere seconds before you pass out.

The first reaction should be to try to get your hand or arm between their arm and your neck. Dropping your chin into their forearm and turning your head to try to face them. Try to get their forearm off your neck. At the very least get your neck into the crook of their elbow. Any of these will give you some breathing room.

Striking with a full barrage of martial arts self-defense techniques is required. Elbows to the rib cage, finger strikes to the eyes or nose, hammerfist to the groin, stomping their feet, biting their forearm, pulling hair, manipulating fingers and destroying joints or breaking bones, or backward kicks to their knees or legs may be needed to get them to release you. This is a life-threatening situation. Full force strikes as quickly as possible through the targets must be applied. Once released flee the scene as quickly as you can.

The Importance of Rest and Recovery in Jiu Jitsu

After training, rest & recovery should be an important & vital part of your regimen. When training, it is very important to maintain peak awareness & focus. But what about after training? Sometimes it is difficult to unwind after a night of sweeps and chokes, when muscles ache and you feel dehydrated. When sparring or rolling your mind is incredibly active and aware. When at rest if your mind races at 100 mph, you might think " how can i rest my mind? "

It may seem that the nights lessons and techniques may have gone too fast and there might not have been enough time to drill or utilize the moves, but this sport is more of a marathon. It wasn't meant to be taken as a " now " martial art, since experience cannot be taught.

More often than not after grappling, the body tends to feel sore and wore out, this is natural since the body isn't meant to be put in this type of workout regimen. But the body's natural ability to adapt and recover quickly after being broken down also benefits. The first few weeks or months may feel as though you are being worked at the Marine level, but that is only temporary. What really happens when you fight through the mental anguish is the body " learns " how to become more efficient, thus losing excess weight and increasing metabolism while burning fat.

But rest and recovery are also a vital ingredient in the development of a good exercise regimen or good grappling game. Distractions during everyday life can affect Jiu Jitsu progress in many ways. It has happened to professional athletes of all spectrums in sports including Jiu Jitsu and mixed martial arts. Many of us have other things in life such as work, family, relationships and so on and so forth that can cause distractions or cause us to not want to train on any given day.

But rest and recovery should never be neglected in any way. The reason why rest & recovery should always be at the forefront of good training is because when we ignore our body's natural response to heavy physical assertion we increase our chances of becoming injured and becoming injured is a setback in any sport including Jiu Jitsu. Many of grapplers have ignored or brushed off small injuries and when that happens, small injuries become large injuries.

What may seem trivial after a night of training could potentially become more serious in the long run. Our natural competitiveness can be a double edge sword in that we want to win and give ourselves that edge for ourselves, and for our academy. Nobody sets out to compete to lose, there would be no point.

Many people who grapple also walk around with some sort of injury, it happens, it's part of the sport, how severe the injury and how a person's ability to tolerate the pain and/or injury depends on the time that has passed rested.

Supplements can also reduce the frequency of injuries through health improvements. Joints and ligaments have the most frequency of being injured in this sport. Glucosamine and Chondroitin, when used regularly, can increase the joints stability and reduce the chances of ligaments being torn.

There is no " fool proof " way of not getting injured in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it isn't possible, if you ask any one who trains in this sport they will tell you they have either been injured at one point or are currently injured in some form or fashion. So in retrospect, rest & recovery should be a major subject when discussing grappling only to reduce the chances of being hurt temporarily or even permanently. We don't set out to break arms even though we train for such activities, but given the competiveness of the sport it will happen eventually, just take care when your body aches as this body is the only one you have.

So be safe on the mat and remember that you are there to train and not to rip your partners arms or legs off, save that for competition!

The Boxer Rebellion

Martial arts have always played a role in warfare, but in China's Boxer Rebellion the Righteous Harmony Society martial arts were at the core of their beliefs that would lead to a violent uprising. As China approached the 20th century things weren't good in the ancient empire. Over the previous decades thousands of foreign residence from Europe, The United Sates and other countries began calling the country home. They brought with them western goods to sell and began preaching Christianity. The Righteous Harmony Society began as a secret society in Northern China, and was based primarily out of the Shandong providence. Like many groups they practiced unarmed and armed combat and built up their bodies through calisthenics. Despite Chinese martial arts being very different from western styles boxing European began calling the Chinese martial artists Boxers and the name stuck. While martial arts can benefit an individual in many ways the Boxers took it one step further. They believed that through study and training that an individual not only could perform amazing feats, but could also make them immune to weapons. While some martial artists in China and elsewhere have accomplished a lot through training ignoring bullets and blades is not one of the benefits of intense training.

Supernatural beliefs aside the situation in China only deteriorated as the native Chinese clashed with Christians over offenses real and imagined. Some said foreign imports were destroying the local economy while others saw Christian beliefs as a threat to their culture. Some even blamed natural disasters on the outsiders and violence became more frequent and included acts of arson and murders committed primarily by the Boxers. The elements within the Chinese government were sympathetic to the Boxer's cause, so little was to prevent the violence, so the western nations sent in troops to protect their citizens. It wouldn't be long before a global conflict erupted in the streets of China.

In June 1900 after all diplomatic efforts had failed the Boxers with the Imperial army along with peasant volunteers began attacking foreign properties and embassies in the cities of Tianjin and Beijing. When the fighting began civilians and government personnel from Europe, the United States, Russia and Japan took refuge in the Beijing Legation Quarter which had been China's diplomatic center for over fifty years. The British delegation put out a call for help, but the telegraph lines were cut as well as the rail lines, so the foreign residence of the city were on their own.

For close two months a ragtag force recruited from eight different nations including American sailors and Marines fought against overwhelming odds. They took on the Chinese martial artists armed with a variety of traditional weapons as well as the Imperial army which was eager to drive out the foreign invaders. Despite their difference the foreign troops all learned to work together and superior training held up against overwhelming superiority until a relief force arrived. Ancient Ways Of Giving Your Body Kung Fu Chi Power!

All right, I've had enough of the pretty boy weight lifting and the body calisthenics...I want an exercise that will give me the ultimate Kung Fu Chi Power! I want to be a Kung Fu Superman! I want to rip up oak trees by their roots and knock over outhouses with my little toe! I'm going to start doing the following exercises until I make it!

First, for kung fu jump kicks, I'm going to do the following exercise. I'm going to dig a hole, one shovelful a day, and practice jumping into and out of the hole a thousand times a day. By the time I'm down to ten feet, I should be able to do jumping kicks that'll knock over skyscrapers!

Okay, for body slamming that would make king kong envious, I've got a real he man, kung fu drill! I'm going to live on a ranch and every day I'll lift a calf on my shoulders. By the time the calf is full grown, I'll be able to lift anybody in the world, and throw him or her at the ground so hard they come out on the other side!

Of course brute force isn't all I want, not when it comes to getting the kind of Kung Fu power 'm thinking of, so I've got a kung fu training drill that will sharpen the eyes and make my fingers nimble. I'm going to sneak up on a wasps nest and practice snatching wasps out of the air with my chopsticks! Hah!

Learning how to take a punch is pretty crucial, also, and I've got the right martial arts exercise for that one. I'm going to practice sprinting into brick fences and trees and other immovable objects. Three years of running as fast as I can through orchards with a blindfold on should build me up.

And the head, how could I forget martial arts head conditioning! I saw a guy in a chop sockie flick who could ring a giant bell just by slamming his head into it! Hey, if I practice smashing into bells with my head long enough, nobody will be able to ever ring my bell, if you know what I mean.

Let's see, what other things do I have to...oh yeah, 'that!' I think a little makiwara training with 'that' will make 'that' strong as an elephant. Of course it may appear a bit ugly when callouses start growing all over it, but that's a small price. After all, if even 'that' is truly deadly, I will have achieved my goals and be the ultimate kung fu strongster!

I will be the mightiest Kung Fu warrior on the globe! Every body part will be thick, immense, dripping with raw power, and able to be used in any any life and death struggle! All hail to me...the man with the ultimate Kung Fu Chi Power!

The Importance of Elbow Strikes in MMA

Elbow strikes in MMA allow a fighter to do deliver a contest winning move whilst maintaining defence at the same time. Elbow strikes can be delivered standing or on the ground. The elbow is probably the hardest part of the body to strike with and for this reason its importance cannot be ignored.

Standing Elbow Strikes

These can be delivered in several ways but the most effective is probably with the elbow and forearm out in front.

Contact is made via a circular motion of the arm and elbow along with a twist of the torso.This enables a strike which also entails a guard.It is extremely difficult to block this type of elbow strike.If contact is made it can result in a knockout or TKO due to cuts.The other hand should be in front of the face guarding.Be careful if you miss as you can open up the right side of your face (if striking with the right elbow)Always return the striking arm quickly back to a defensive position in case of a counter strike.

Upward Elbow Strikes

This is similar in execution to an uppercut but can only be effective in very close quarters.Instead of a circular motion, it is linear.It is primarily the bodyweight being transferred upwards, not arm speed, that makes it effective.

Elbowing and Punching on the Ground

Otherwise known as Ground and Pound, this technique grinds your opponent out.Can only work if your opponent does not have control of your head.Is best delivered from a height and crashing down motion, often going straight through your opponent's guard or forcing their own hands into their face.This article has been viewed 43 time(s).

How to Use Your Feet In All Martial Arts Training, Regardless of Style

It might sound a bit daft but the majority of people in the martial arts fail to use their feet when training. In fact, they probably fail to use them at all, except in circumstances when the feet use themselves!

Using the feet to their potential
Of course, everyone uses their feet in martial arts but the trouble is most fail to optimize the use of their feet. It's rather like training in big platform boots where you can't feel what's going on and as a result movement is compromised. The irony is that even training in bare feet the majority of martial artists fail to use their feet when the opportunity to really feel what is happening is spurned.

The foot/ankle complex is constructed of more than 30 bones comprising 28 joints which allow a huge amount of movement; twisting, bending etc.... Most of this movement potential is circumnavigated by the adoption of rather static 'flat-footed' stances which limit the foot action possible and subsequently movement potential for the whole body.

This has several drawbacks, not least that ground reaction force is compromised and therefore resultant force generated in strikes. Another important failing is the reduced stability as you are not 'in your feet'. This is a term more akin to Chinese Martial Arts but important for all martial artists and refers to being 'grounded' or 'sinking' your weight.

My earlier analogy with the platform boots is relevant here and could be extended. So if you are 'in your feet' you would be IN a pair of slippers rather than ON the platform boots. This may not be obvious and probably sounds like a load of old tosh but can be demonstrated quite easily.

Sanchin: mobility and stability
This much misunderstood stance (and kata, for that matter) provides an excellent vehicle for investigating 'sinking' your weight optimally and feeling what is happening in your feet. It requires you to use your feet properly, or put another way you must be 'in your feet' (slippers rather than platforms) and providing the structure to do so.

First, stand behind a friend, place your arms round their middle and lift them up, note how heavy your friend feels. Then get this person to bend at the ankle (the knee will follow), weight forward (over the ball of the foot) and feet spread the weight can 'sink' into the feet. Now lift your friend in the same manner as before.

Amazingly, your friend will be heavier! This does not mean that they have suddenly put on weight but rather they have allowed their weight to drop lower and to be supported by the feet. So long as the weight is forward and NOT on the heels movement from the feet is easily achieved, this means that Ground Reaction Force can be transferred into a punch as you press into the floor and the twisting bending motions of the feet can be accessed.

So throw out the platforms and put on the slippers to optimize your feet for your martial arts training.
