Shane Carwin - 10 Things You Might Not Know About The Next Heavyweight Champion

When Shane "The Engineer" Carwin blew up on the Mixed Martial Arts scene, he made a huge (pun intended) and lasting impression on MMA fans everywhere with his sheer size and athletic prowess. Shane reeled off 12 wins in a row, all finished in the first round, before losing to Brock Lesnar at UFC 116. Here is a look at some things you might not know about the next UFC Heavyweight champion.

1.) He attended the Colorado School of Mines and received a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

2.) He was a two-time All-American in football for Western State in located Colorado.

3.) Shane became an engineer out of college and continues to work in that field.

4.) Shane was the Colorado "Ring of Fire" heavyweight champion before signing with the UFC.

5.) He is a volunteer wrestling coach for the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO.

6.) Shane made his UFC debut on the undercard of UFC 84.

7.) Still currently works as an engineer for Weld County in Colorado.

8.) Received "Knockout of the Night" vs. Frank Mir at UFC 87.

9.) Was a highly scouted NFL line backing prospect until a back injury sidelined his NFL hopes.

10.) Shane is huge Slurpee fan.

After dominating Brock Lesnar in a fight that arguably could have been stopped, we can look for Shane to get back on the road to the UFC heavyweight belt in 2011. At the time of this article, Shane was in the process of recovering what was deemed successful back surgery to repair damage that he has dealt with since the back injury I noted above.

BJ Penn Believes He'll Be Lightweight Champion Again

BJ Penn?is considered?one of the best lightweight MMA fighters in the history of the sport.? That said, his two recent losses to UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar have many believing that we've seen his best days come and go.? But as Penn readies for his UFC 123 showdown with Matt Hughes, he has verbalized a different take on things.

"I know I'll get my chance again," Penn told SportsCenter on Wednesday. "I plan on going out and beating Matt Hughes, and honestly, deep down in my heart, I know I'll be lightweight champion again."

Is it just a pipedream for Penn?? No, it isn't.? Though a rematch with Edgar doesn't look like it's on the horizon, nor is there any reason to believe he would win one, that doesn't mean he won't get another title shot.? With a win over Hughes, Penn would be able to come back to the lightweight division as a contender.? And as good as Edgar has looked recently, it would seem important to note that he lost to Gray Maynard the last time the two tangled.? And he's still not going to out-wrestle the Xtreme Couture product.

In other words, if Maynard defeats Edgar again in their upcoming match up, and Penn defeats Hughes, "The Prodigy" will find himself on the short list of lightweight contenders.

But it all starts with a UFC 123 fight for him that is hardly a shoe-in.
