Improving Your Punching Power By Learning to Punch With Your Feet

I often tell people to hit with their feet, the general reaction to that sentence is to say "do you mean kick?". Obviously, I don't because I'd just say 'kick' if that were the case. No, I do literally mean punch with your feet. It is easy to see when someone is using their feet and conversely it is easy to see when another is not. Moreover, it is easy to feel whether someone is using their feet in their punch or not.

In fact, I should really say foot, as it is usually just one that is being used per punch, it doesn't have to be the same one, you can pretty much change feet just as you might changes fists to punch with. I am, of course, talking about using your feet to drive the punch toward the target.

It is one of the martial arts mysteries as to why someone would forget about their feet when throwing a punch but people often do. Forgetting to drive from the foot, the punch is thrown with the throwing movement dragging the trailing foot toward the target. Worse still it may just float in the air, often moving backwards away from the target, which does nothing to add to the power produced or directing it to the target.

The feet should contribute to these factors, both of which are major contributors to the final power output of the punch thrown. In simple terms if you do not use your feet, the power delivered to the target will be much less than if you did. Therefore it is very important to use your feet to ACTIVELY contribute to the punch and if possible to each and every punch thrown. Your feet should drive the punching action and direct that action toward the target. After all we all want to generate as much power as possible.

If you make someone aware of what is happening in their feet as they punch a pad their mind moves from the fist to the foot and some will be able to tell that their feet are not contributing. Others, however, will need a bit more help to get the feel for what is happening in their feet. Of course, it is one thing to realise that your feet are not helping to produce power and quite another to enable them to contribute.

If you put the effort in you will be able to alter your technique so that your feet are contributing power to your punches. It is worth the effort, you will be delighted at the power improvements when you learn to punch with your feet.

BJ Penn Believes He'll Be Lightweight Champion Again

BJ Penn?is considered?one of the best lightweight MMA fighters in the history of the sport.? That said, his two recent losses to UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar have many believing that we've seen his best days come and go.? But as Penn readies for his UFC 123 showdown with Matt Hughes, he has verbalized a different take on things.

"I know I'll get my chance again," Penn told SportsCenter on Wednesday. "I plan on going out and beating Matt Hughes, and honestly, deep down in my heart, I know I'll be lightweight champion again."

Is it just a pipedream for Penn?? No, it isn't.? Though a rematch with Edgar doesn't look like it's on the horizon, nor is there any reason to believe he would win one, that doesn't mean he won't get another title shot.? With a win over Hughes, Penn would be able to come back to the lightweight division as a contender.? And as good as Edgar has looked recently, it would seem important to note that he lost to Gray Maynard the last time the two tangled.? And he's still not going to out-wrestle the Xtreme Couture product.

In other words, if Maynard defeats Edgar again in their upcoming match up, and Penn defeats Hughes, "The Prodigy" will find himself on the short list of lightweight contenders.

But it all starts with a UFC 123 fight for him that is hardly a shoe-in.

Current MMA Fight Organizations and Promoters

Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) is one of the fastest growing sports in world, however, many people still don't know anything about it. The biggest fight promotion in the world would have to be Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). This is what many people think of when they hear about MMA. However, to the more devote MMA fans, UFC is just one of the many fight organizations.

It can be confusing to the lay person, especially now. The UFC just merged with its sister fight promotion the WEC. When it first started the WEC had all of the normal fight weights. Though over time it was whittled down to the very little guys that fought in the 135, 145, and 155 pound weight classes. With the addition of the WEC into the UFC, the UFC will now have two more weight classes. They will also be able to see if some of the best in the 155lb division are really the best or will be challenged by the WEC fighters.

This is not the first merger for the UFC. A few years ago they merged with Pride Fighting. Pride Fighting at the time was a Japanese fighting organization. They also did MMA, though some of their rules were a little different. For example, they fought in a ring, allowed striking in the head when one fighter was standing and the other was on the ground and their time limits were set up a little different. Many times fighters that got cut from the UFC would go fight in Pride or Pride fighters would come and fight in the UFC. Since their merger there is no Pride Fighting anymore.

These are not the only fight organizations out there today. Strikeforce and Bellator are just a few of the bigger organizations out there. Strikeforce and the UFC have been known to not get along. This is because their fighters are under contract to only fight for their promotions. When joint ventures have been suggested, things have not worked out so well for either side. It is not uncommon for fighters to jump organizations when their contracts are up.

The only downside of this is that the fans don't get to see some of the top fighters in the world compete against each other. All they will be able to do is argue back and forth who the better fighter is. Overall, this is good since it fosters a healthy competition between the fight promotions.
